Moving Checklist – What you should include

Moving can be difficult if you aren’t prepared for it. You should start preparing for your move at least a month in advance, to pack, change bills to the new address and more. To help make sure your move goes as smoothly as possible, be sure to add the following things to your moving checklist:

Moving Checklist Canada

Reserve a Moving Service

People are moving year-round, and moving services get booked fast. That is why booking your moving service at least a month in advance should be the first thing on your moving checklist.

Change Your Address

You want to settle into your new home as soon as you unpack, so it’s ideal to start the paperwork for a change in address at least a month before you move. Take care of administration work such as school transfers, change of address on bills and government documents, so settling in won’t be a problem.

Sell or Donate Unwanted Possessions

After you have dumped all of the things that you no longer need, you can focus solely on packing what you will be taking along. Dig through your closets, dressers, attic, basement and garage, and set aside everything that you don’t need. Anything that still has some practical use or value should be donated, sold in a garage sale or given away; if something is destroyed or worthless, it’s probably best to throw it out. You are doing these things well in advance, because they take time to do and you don’t want them interfering with your actual move.

Prepare a Moving Kit

Right before you move, all of your possessions will be packed away and this makes living more difficult. By setting aside a few necessities (clothes, utensils, etc.), your week without your typical necessities will go smoothly.

Start Labelling Boxes

The unpacking process is just as important as packing for the move. By labelling boxes, you can place them in the appropriate rooms when they’re unloaded from the truck. This will also help when unpacking because you can prioritize which boxes should be unpacked first.

Schedule Disconnection of Hydro and Water

Call the companies that supply your hydro, water, cable, etc. a couple of weeks in advance to schedule your disconnect date. This helps to ensure that you won’t be getting charged for services after you’re already gone.

The Night Before Moving Day

Depending on whether you are a homeowner or a renter and when new residents are moving in, you may want to complete your moving checklist with the following:

  • Shut down and clean your refrigerator. Even an empty refrigerator can smell if you don’t clean it properly, especially if it’s turned off.  If the home will sit empty for a bit, consider unplugging the fridge so you’re not using any unnecessary power.
  • Set some money aside.  Anything can happen during moving day and when you first move in. Stay prepared with an emergency fund to fix any problems.
